How HIV is prevented
HIV prevention is strongest when people can combine the tools that fit their lives and risks.
- Testing: knowing your status helps you access treatment or prevention.
- PrEP: medicine taken by HIV-negative people to reduce the chance of getting HIV.
- Condoms: reduce HIV risk and help prevent other sexually transmitted infections.
- PEP: emergency medicine after a possible exposure, usually started as soon as possible.
- U=U: people with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load do not sexually transmit HIV.
- Sterile injecting equipment: prevents transmission through shared needles or equipment.
